Coming to the Children's Emergency Department

The Children's Emergency Department does not take appointments. Service is rendered on a first come, first serve basis, excluding critical trauma patients.

For emergency assistance, call 911.
For urgent assistance, call your local physician first.

The Children's Emergency Room is open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. 7 days a week. Pediatric patients requiring care outside of these hours will be admitted UNC Hospitals' general Emergency Department, located adjacent to the Pediatric Emergency Room. A resident physician specializing in the care of children is available in the UNC Emergency Department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parents with infants or young adult children seeking treatment may come to the Emergency Department any time without an appointment. In accordance with regulations and our commitment to providing the highest level of care to all patients, our staff does not dispense advice over the telephone. Any parent whose child has received treatment in the Emergency Department should feel free to return if they have concerns related to an illness or injury that was treated. Many conditions evolve and change over time, and we are always more than willing to repeat an evaluation or perform further testing when events do not progress as expected.
