Fetal Surgery: In utero management of congenital spinal & cranial defects

Fetal surgery requires an expert team of maternal fetal medicine specialists, surgeons, neonatologists, and pediatric specialists. The Center of Maternal and Infant Health at UNC has worked for decades to provide high-quality and cutting-edge therapies to high-risk pregnant women and their babies.

UNC offers fetal surgery to repair open neural tube defects. The interdisciplinary team works with obstetricians across the state and across the Southeastern United States to provide consultations and treatment to families.

Neuroendoscopy

Neuroendoscopy refers to a neurosurgical procedure that provides a magnified anatomical view in a minimally invasive manner.

Stereotactic, computer-guided surgery neuroendoscopy

Stereotactic radiosurgery refers to a form of radiation therapy that focuses high-powered x-rays on a small area of the body.  Even though it is called “surgery,” it is actually a treatment and not a surgical procedure.

We work closely with specialists to determine the plan of care and intervention needed for medical, surgical, stereotactic radiosurgery or any combination of these.
